Volunteer Spotlight: Wesley Attwood

Name: Wesley Attwood
Title: Firefighter
Department: South Strabane Fire Department
Location: Washington, PA

Why are you an NVFC member?
The NVFC is my only national advocate as a volunteer firefighter. They understand the volunteer fire service, its needs, and the needs of volunteer firefighters who serve their communities across this diverse nation. I know the NVFC has my interests in mind, and they always provide the support I need through resources, training, and special opportunities.

What is your occupation?
Epidemiologist

Why are you a fire service volunteer?
My grandfather was a volunteer firefighter in Punxsutawney, PA, for 52 years. He always taught me the importance of service to your community and others. I serve as a volunteer firefighter because I have the capability, time, and drive to do so and be there when my community needs me.

What year did you join the fire or emergency service?
2013

What are your memorable moments as a firefighter or EMS provider?
One of my most memorable moments as a volunteer firefighter is working on our annual kids camp and teaching our community’s youth about the value of helping others through public service. Each year, we have dozens of children and pre-teens attend our kids camp, where they get to learn about what firefighters do and get hands-on with some firefighter skills. It’s a great opportunity for kids to see themselves as future first responders and the need to help others when there is a need to do so.

What contributions have you (and your department) made in your community?
We have created a comprehensive fire and life safety program that reaches families, businesses, and even the elderly in assisted living facilities. This education is critical to reducing risk in the community. We also use this opportunity to provide community members with skills such as CPR and first aid.
