NVFC Member Spotlight: Robin Bruno

Name: Robin Bruno
Title: Director on the department’s board of directors
Department: Tivoli Fire Department
Location: Tivoli, NY
Why are you an NVFC member?
I originally began my membership with NVFC in order to be alerted about grant opportunities. Throughout the year, I have been happy to receive a wealth of information covering fire and rescue opportunities, free trainings, and informative articles on a variety of topics. Being kept abreast of local happenings is a great thing, but receiving news and information from the national level is fantastic and inspiring!
What is your occupation?
Executive assistant to a CEO
Why are you a fire service volunteer?
I was approached by our chief back in 2018 regarding joining the Tivoli Fire Department to assist with some clerical duties. Once involved, I saw an opportunity to be part of a phenomenal team that provided crucial responses to our public, and I decided I wanted to be a part of that team. I find it fulfilling and rewarding to help others who are in the midst of an emergency situation. As much as I initially started to just help with clerical duties, I decided early on to progress into the department. I now hold a 1st lieutenant’s office for the Fire Police Squad, I am the corresponding secretary for the department, and am one of the four directors on the board of directors for the Tivoli Fire Department. It is truly a pleasure to be involved with this group!!!
What year did you join the fire or emergency services?
2018
What are your memorable moments as a firefighter or EMS provider?
Some memorable moments would be standing outside while it is torrentially pouring down and directing traffic through some wicked storms. And, although stationed in order to keep a smooth flow of traffic at numerous calls, I find my heart is with our interior and other exterior firefighters as they brave fire and unimaginable conditions at assorted scenes.
What contributions have you (and your department) made in your community?
I feel I’ve contributed to the community by taking on these roles within our department. Tivoli Fire Department has a phenomenal reputation within our community, along with our mutual aid areas. Our department hosts a number of events throughout the year, such as breakfasts and chicken barbecues. These are very well attended by our local residents and visitors from near and far. Our guys always participate in activities for children, in our village and in other towns. We have a busy group. They are consistently involved with local events, and the sacrifice we all make to our community lies mostly in our rapid response to help others when they are experiencing an emergency situation.
What practices help you stay physically and mentally strong for your crew?
Active participation with our team and keeping up on training is important to our department. We remain active and keep striving to stay on top of the physical and mental portions of being a healthy and successful firefighter and member of our department.
