NVFC Member Spotlight: Beth Harrington

Name: Beth Harrington
Title:
President
Department:
Slaterville Volunteer Fire Company
Location:
Slaterville Springs, NY

Why are you an NVFC member?
I appreciate the access to the wisdom, experience, and expertise of the other members, also the quality of educational opportunities.

What is your occupation?
RN, paramedic, emergency manager (retired)

Why are you a fire service volunteer?
Living in a small rural community, neighbors must help each other. Joining a volunteer fire and EMS agency was one way to accomplish that.

What year did you join the fire or emergency services?
1976

What are your memorable moments as a firefighter or EMS provider?
It is more a remembrance of many, many simple moments … an elderly woman agreeing to go to the hospital after a fall because we found someone to take care of her dog, a hug from a family member, a thank you of homemade cookies brought to a company meeting by a community member, and the like. Of course, there were cardiac arrest saves, good fire stops, and other calls that made you feel good and proud of the people you were working with.

What contributions have you (and your department) made in your community?
Our department has a philosophy that our fire organization should be more than just a group of people using a fire hose. To that end, we host various organizations such as the county’s search and rescue, the local history association, and promote public education by hosting outside speakers (emergency preparedness, Alzheimer’s association, the County Office for Aging as some examples. We also host a weekly Respite Program for caregivers and a (free) senior social/congregate dining/luncheon every Tuesday. We also collaborate with other local organizations to sponsor and/or host social events.

What practices help you stay physically and mentally strong for your crew?
At 80 years of age, I certainly practice falls prevention! Mentally, continual learning and participating in new activities keep me sharp.
