Get Ready for Safety Stand Down, June 14-20

Safety Stand Down takes place June 14-20 with the theme “Firefighter FITNESS: Fit to Serve, Fit for Life.” Use this opportunity to focus all training and education during that week on the crucial role fitness plays in keeping responders healthy, safe, and ready to respond in their communities. New resources are available to help plan your department’s Safety Stand Down activities.

The week is broken into seven daily topics that take responders through the foundations of physical fitness, how they can continue to be met throughout the year, and sustainable strategies for long-term success. These daily topics are: Foundations of Firefighter Fitness, Intentional, Technique, Nutrition, Evaluation, Sleep, and Strategies for Success.

Safety Stand Down can be implemented in full the week of June 14-20, or use that week as a starting point for training that will take place over the course of the following weeks and months. To help departments plan and implement their activities, the Safety Stand Down website provides the following tools and resources:

  • Short videos introducing each day’s themes
  • Two-page infographics that can be distributed during training and serve as discussion points
  • Educational modules to use at training sessions
  • Research SCANs to help put foundational research into practical context
  • Activity ideas
  • Webinars, articles, and podcasts exploring this year’s theme
  • Additional resources and training to support the key messages of this year’s theme

In addition, all responders can take the Safety Stand Down Quiz to test their knowledge of this year’s theme. Everyone who completes the quiz by June 30 can enter for the chance to win one of 200 limited-edition challenge coins. Departments can encourage their members to take the quiz as part of their Safety Stand Down activities.
