January 13, 2026
Just in time for National Blood Donor Month in January, NHTSA’s Office of EMS and National 911 Program have released new infographics highlighting effective post-crash care and the life-saving potential of blood transfusion in the prehospital setting.
Administering blood in the field to motor vehicle crash victims may reduce mortality by 37%, a four-fold increase in survival. The new infographics are designed as practical tools for EMS leaders to drive collaboration with 911 and highway safety partners. Additionally, the infographics identify potential countermeasures and opportunities to improve post-crash care as State Highway Safety Offices prepare Triennial Highway Safety Plans, due July 2026.

A prehospital blood transfusion program cannot function without a reliable source of blood. National Blood Donor Month in January is an opportunity to highlight the role blood donation plays in supporting trauma care and saving lives nationwide. EMS agencies can play an important role in helping to increase the nation’s donated blood supply by educating the public about the importance of blood donation and an ample blood supply through local promotional and educational efforts. Public safety and emergency communication agencies can also host blood drives and encourage public safety personnel to donate blood, directly impacting local supply volumes.
