Physical Fitness is the Focus of Safety Stand Down 2026
December 23, 2025
Being a firefighter is physically demanding work. As first responders are increasingly expected to handle an ever-expanding range of emergencies, having the physical ability to mitigate them safely and effectively is more critical than ever. To help firefighters of all ages and capabilities meet these requirements, Safety Stand Down 2026, June 14-20, will highlight the foundations of physical fitness, how they can continue to be met throughout the years, and sustainable strategies for long-term success.
The official Safety Stand Down 2026 theme will be announced in January on the campaign web site at www.safetystanddown.org. In the following months, the tools, guidance, and resources needed to successfully plan for and implement the campaign will be provided.
Safety Stand Down is a joint initiative of the International Association of Fire Chiefs Safety, Health and Survival Section, the National Volunteer Fire Council, the National Fire Protection Association®, the Fire Department Safety Officers Association, and the International Association of Fire Fighters. Held each year during the third week of June, the campaign works to reduce the number of preventable injuries and deaths in the fire and emergency services.
