Volunteer Spotlight: Todd Ross

Name: Todd Ross
Title: Chief
Department: Denmark Fire & Rescue
Location: Fort Madison, IA

Why are you an NVFC member?
To connect with other volunteer firefighters across the country. We all have a common goal and the same common problems.

What is your occupation?
Chemical plant operator

Why are you a fire service volunteer?
It is a need in my community and lots of people just won’t step up and volunteer. The longer I was on the department, the more I got involved. I like helping people, especially the elderly. People need someone there for them when they are having the worst day of their life.

What year did you join the fire or emergency services?
1994

What are your memorable moments as a firefighter or EMS provider?
The calls with a good outcome, but then there are the ones with the less favorable also.

What contributions have you (and your department) made in your community?
When we had an elementary school in town, we would do fire prevention at the station for the kids. We volunteer beyond fire and EMS; we help with community events and take part in Halloween like everyone else. We are highly visible in our community and that is why we receive the donation, memorial, and estate money we do. During inclement weather, we leave our meeting door unlocked in case someone in the community has a weather emergency and needs to get out of the cold or heat.
