Volunteer Spotlight: Steven Lowry
Name: Steven Lowry
Title: Assistant Chief
Department: Renfroe Volunteer Fire Department
Location: Alpine, AL
Why are you an NVFC member?
I joined the NVFC to further my knowledge. It also helps me connect with others and learn about the challenges departments are facing as well as the successes they are having.
What is your occupation?
Retired
Why are you a fire service volunteer?
I was a paid firefighter for five years at two departments. I started as a fire explorer scout and then became a volunteer. Thirty years later, while doing medical education, I wanted to bring my knowledge back to my local volunteer department and help my community.
What year did you join the fire or emergency services?
1974
What are your memorable moments as a firefighter or EMS provider?
Delivering a baby between two gas pumps while working as a firefighter paramedic.
What contributions have you (and your department) made in your community?
We save lives and help anyone in need. At the age of 69, I still run the most calls in my department. Last year I responded to more than 375 calls out of about 400.
Training younger volunteers is also a passion of mine. While they may not have the experience I do yet, I enjoy helping them learn and grow. I recently took a wildfire class and dug handlines to keep up my training so I can continue serving our community.
What practices help you stay physically and mentally strong for your crew?
I do the same work and training that the younger firefighters are doing.
