Volunteer Spotlight: Ron Briggs

Name: Ron Briggs
Title: Fire Photographer
Department: Anson Fire Department (former member)
Location: Chippewa Falls, WI

Why are you an NVFC member?
I saw an ad for the NVFC and decided to check it out, plus I was also told about it by another NVFC member. Being a member has already paid off for me by being able to share some of my knowledge. I grew up in the fire service with family in it, but chose to go the photography route; it is just as important for the documentation aspect these days, plus it is used for fire inspections, investigations, and more. I have also used the NVFC site for information about grants. I am very satisfied.

What is your occupation?
Fire photographer

Why are you a fire service volunteer?
I grew up around fire/EMS my whole life with family in the fire service or EMS, as well as law enforcement. I did not want to go fully into firefighting, as I love photography, so I became a fire photographer by starting out small and working my way up. I started out by photographing two fires in a 12-day period in my area, and then delivering the photos to the local fire chief, and it took off from there. I am currently on one department and also serve another department as a non-roster member doing the photography for them.

What year did you join the fire or emergency service?
2009

What are your memorable moments as a firefighter or EMS provider?
As a fire photographer, I’ve had the opportunity to capture local history, beyond just fire department history, for three departments over my 16-year career. I have seen the highs and lows that come along with being in the fire service but I still love what I do.

What contributions have you (and your department) made in your community?
I have written grants, which is helping enable my main department to update their rescue boat and portable pump. The department has also added more personnel over the last few years and made sure everyone gets more training.
