Volunteer Spotlight: Robert Cumberland

Robert Cumberland is a former NVFC director from Maryland and 58-year volunteer fire service veteran. He previously served as president of the Maryland State Firemen’s Association, Maryland Fire Chiefs Association, Carroll County Fire Chief Association, Carroll County Volunteer Firemen’s Association, and Cumberland Valley Volunteer Firemen’s Association.

Why are you an NVFC member?
I work hard at supporting the volunteer emergency services and was a past NVFC director from Maryland. I support many of the programs that the NVFC has to offer, including their legislative program.

What is your occupation?
Retired

Why are you a fire service volunteer?
I became a volunteer in my community many years ago to help protect and educate the public about fire and life safety programs.

What year did you join the fire or emergency services?
1963

What are your memorable moments as a firefighter or EMS provider?
There have been many over the course of more than 50 years. Most of them are the major fires in the city of Westminster, MD.

What contributions have you (and your department) made in your community?
The department has worked hard to promote public education and life safety programs. Today, we are also working to educate the public about not being a “D” driver and the state’s “Move Over” law.
