Volunteer Spotlight: Linda Brooks

Name: Linda Brooks
Title: Training Coordinator
Department: Swoope Volunteer Fire Company
Location: Staunton, VA

Why are you an NVFC member?
I enjoy reading the blogs and getting resources that are available to help me lead within my department.

What is your occupation?
Administrative assistant/scheduler/facilities director

Why are you a fire service volunteer?
I have been a volunteer for 25 years. I enjoy being a part of the greater good in the community, whether it is providing information to help community members with fire prevention or asking someone at a restaurant where they live and if they have considered being a volunteer. I have a passion for the volunteer fire community; it’s not just about ME, it’s about WE. If I can give my time to help instill that in our department, then I will do all I can to volunteer my time to make a difference in the department and community.

What year did you join the fire or emergency services?
1997

What contributions have you (and your department) made in your community?
We enjoy doing a Santa run every year. We put Santa on top of the engine and the department comes together to dress for the event. We go through our first due, play Christmas music from the intercom, and hand out candy to the kids and parents. The community loves it. It’s a small thing, but it’s for the community, and they always ask when it is happening.
