Volunteer Spotlight: Kirk Odiet

Name: Kirk Odiet
Title: Lieutenant/Training Officer
Department Name: Glen Ellyn Volunteer Fire Company
Location: Glen Ellyn, IL

What is your occupation?
Heavy Equipment Operator

Why are you an NVFC member?
I enjoy both the online training that is available as well as updates about current trends and legislation that affect volunteers across the country. I try to bring that information to the fire company so that we do our best to keep up with current trends.

Why are you a volunteer firefighter, EMT, or rescue provider?
I have enjoyed serving others for a long time. I started with a Fire Explorer Post when I was 18, and moved on to emergency management for six years before joining the fire company. The best part of the job for me are the simple thank-you’s we get from someone after we have helped them through an emergency. That short moment of gratitude keeps me coming back.

What year did you join the fire or emergency services?
2000

What are your memorable moments as a firefighter or EMS provider?
My first fire as a company officer and first in engine. The years of training and experience that the fire company gave me allowed our company to make a quick knock and save the structure.

What contributions have you (and your department) made in your community?
Our fire company is heavily involved with the community as well as many of the civic organizations in town. These include Honor Guard, Memorial Day, Christmas Walk, and Christmas Baskets.
