Volunteer Spotlight: Kathleen Wagner

Name: Kathleen Wagner
Title: Recording Secretary
Department Name: Allegheny Township VFC #1
Location: Murrysville, PA

Why are you an NVFC member?
I joined to participate in education and learning opportunities.

What is your occupation?
Retired

Why are you a volunteer firefighter, EMT, or rescue provider?
When I retired, I planned to do volunteer work. ATVFC was actively recruiting people at a community event at the time I was beginning to look for opportunities, so the timing worked out. In addition, when I moved to Allegheny Township in 1994, it was my first experience with a rural area. I was appalled to learn that people expected the firefighters to respond 24/7 as well as raise the funds necessary to do so through fish fries, bingos, etc. I supported the Company through donations while I worked.

What year did you join the fire or emergency services?
2013

What are your memorable moments as a firefighter or EMS provider?
I have been tremendously impressed with the volunteers in our company and others. One of my first experiences was a barn fire located a mile off the road and no hydrant coverage. A drop pool was established at the bottom of the lane for the tankers with a relay of engines from multiple companies up to the blaze. The second barn was saved as well as the farmhouse. There have been several instances where I, as a female firefighter, have been able to give comfort to victims’ families on scene and help to keep them out of harm’s way so others could do what needed to be done.

What contributions have you (and your department) made in your community?
Our company responded to over 200 calls last year. Structure fires, brush fires, vehicle accidents, flooding calls, and searches make up the majority of our calls. In addition, we provide lighting when needed at community or school functions. Fire education is given each year in the school.
