Volunteer Spotlight: Joshua Young

Name: Joshua Young
Title:
Deputy Chief
Department:
Kutztown Fire & Rescue
Location:
Lenhartsville, PA

Why are you an NVFC member?
I became an NVFC member because I wanted to expand my resources and knowledge. While I’m not active within the [Volunteer Voices] chats, there are great documents that other members have shared that assist with newly elected or appointed officers to assist with functionality of their department. NVFC is a great training tool to assist officers with bettering their knowledge and is a great place to obtain the latest and most pertinent information.

What is your occupation?
Code enforcement

Why are you a fire service volunteer?
I joined the fire service world as something to better myself and help with the community. Now I stay in the fire service because it has been something I have enjoyed. I have been able to bring my sons into the station and explain to them the apparatus, the gear, the tools, all to help with their knowledge. Overall, it is just a blessing to be able to give back to the community.

What year did you join the fire or emergency services?
2007

What are your memorable moments as a firefighter or EMS provider?
One of my most memorable moments was when my now 4-year-old son asked to tag along to the station. Everyone welcomed him with open arms and began to show him everything he asked about. To me, it’s about making the station feel like a family atmosphere.

What contributions have you (and your department) made in your community?
We have restarted the process to give back to the community by sponsoring other community organizations and groups. We are also looking at different avenues to become more involved in the public eye.
