Volunteer Spotlight: Jason Allen

Name: Jason Allen
Title: Volunteer firefighter
Department Name: Douglas Okanogan Fire District 15
Location: Brewster, WA

Why are you an NVFC member?
I’m a member because it’s important to keep up with new fire updates and training recommendations as a volunteer firefighter. We drop everything at the dime of a hat when those tones go off because it’s the best job in the world. Being a member gives me the insight on new things to teach to my department and help make my crew better at what they do. It also keeps me updated on gear and equipment changes and helps me stay updated on everything that is necessary to run a strong department and at the same time keep the crew members safe.

What is your occupation?
Armed security guard

Why are you a volunteer firefighter, EMT, or rescue provider?
I am a volunteer firefighter because it’s the most rewarding job in the world. You not only get to shine for your community but help others that are in need. Training and learning new things is rewarding and worthwhile, and when you have to put that training to use you feel good that you helped make a difference in someone’s life. I would not trade being a volunteer for anything – it’s the best feeling out there.

What year did you join the fire or emergency services?
2015

What are your memorable moments as a firefighter or EMS provider?
My memorable moments would have to be being able to put a smile on a kid’s face when you can teach them the importance about fire safety and what to do, and watching them light up as you drive down the street. Also helping someone in need and being told thank you for what you do [and that] it makes a difference.

What contributions have you (and your department) made in your community?
I myself and my department have done many things in and for our community, [including] toy drives and delivering toys with Santa Claus to needy families to make kid’s wishes come true. [We also] make events happen on Fourth of July – firework shows and pancake breakfasts for the community to enjoy.
