Volunteer Spotlight: James LeClair

Name: James LeClair
Title: Fire Chief
Department Name: Newport City Fire Dept.
Location: Newport, Vermont

Why are you an NVFC member?
I’m an NVFC member because of the large variety of important information and training opportunities. Every article is very useful and the information has strengthened our department with recruiting and retention of firefighters. The benefits are above and beyond my expectations. Discounts from companies and the assistance from the staff prove that being a member of NVFC is a must. NVFC is a low cost investment with very good return.

What is your occupation?
Fire Chief

Why are you a volunteer firefighter, EMT, or rescue provider?
I’m a volunteer firefighter because I had family involved in the fire service as I was growing up. I love helping my community. I feel that being a firefighter in my community I can give back. I can help protect community members and their homes. It allows me to give knowledge to daycares and schools as well as to the elderly.

What year did you join the fire or emergency services?
1988

What are your memorable moments as a firefighter or EMS provider?
One of my most memorable moments as a firefighter was being at an apartment building fire and falling from the second floor into the basement. Everything happened so fast, and the immediate response from the back up team got me out safely with minor injuries. It showed me that training is very important.

What contributions have you (and your department) made in your community?
Each year the members of the department donate over a thousand dollars to the Relay 4 Life Organization. It’s a great cause and we’re proud to be a part of it.
