Volunteer Spotlight: Bill Montz

Name: Bill Montz
Title: Chief
Department: Southeast Nebraska MRC/CERT
Location: Lincoln, NE

Why are you an NVFC member?
After 42 years as an emergency responder, it’s still cool to be a part of something bigger than myself. I enjoy the fellowship, esprit de corps, training, and life insurance benefits!

What is your occupation?
Disabled first responder

Why are you a fire service volunteer?
After an explosion in 2019, my role changed, but did not fade. I am now a state instructor and enjoy doing this, as I feel my training saved my life and two other lives that fateful night.

What year did you join the fire or emergency services?
1979

What are your memorable moments as a firefighter or EMS provider?
19 total saves, 16 total grabs, first fire prevention chief of Southeast Nebraska MRC/CERT, awarded state fire heroism award for 2019, assistant rescue chief at Tecumseh (NE) Rescue, chief of Southeast Nebraska MRC/CERT, and many lifesaving and valor medals and awards.

What contributions have you (and your department) made in your community?
We resurrected CERT for a 16-county area in southeast Nebraska. We also provide EMS response for such events as State Fire School in Grand Island and the Cornhusker State Games.
