April 16, 2012
Chief Glenn Jernigan, winner of the National Volunteer Fire Council’s 2011 Lifetime Achievement Award, is a finalist to win the $10,000 Grand Prize in America’s Most Wanted (AMW) All-Star Contest. Vote at www.AMW.com/AllStar and help Chief Jernigan win.
Jernigan has dedicated more than 50 years of his life to the emergency services, as a volunteer firefighter, EMT, fire chief, police officer, and sheriff. He joined Faison (NC) Fire and Rescue in 1959 and has demonstrated exemplary leadership and vision for his department as well as the entire fire service of North Carolina. He retired as Chief of Faison Fire and Rescue in 2006 after 36 years and continues to serve as safety officer and firefighter.
A strong advocate for firefighter training, Jernigan was instrumental in promoting and growing the North Carolina Fire College, resulting in thousands of volunteer firefighters receiving training through the College. He also supported the NC Office of State Fire Marshal in the development and enhancement of specialized training for the NC fire service.
He is active in many community organizations, serving as Little League coach, chair of the boards of local nonprofits, member of the Duplin Rotary Club and Faison Jaycees to name a few. Among his numerous awards, Jernigan is a recipient of the Order of the Long Leaf Pine Award, the highest honor presented by the Governor of North Carolina. He also received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the National Volunteer Fire Council in 2011.
Jernigan continues to protect his community against crime and responds to emergencies. He said, “I could not have been both a firefighter and law enforcement officer if it were not for the good and reliable people working with me.” Glenn Jernigan is one of six finalists in this year’s AMW All-Star Contest, which honors the work of first responders.
The public will choose the grand-prize winner through online votes at AMW.com/AllStar. Voting runs from April 6 through May 5. Members of the public may vote for their favorite first responder once a day, every day. View Chief Jernigan’s AMW All-Star Contest poster and share it with your fellow department members.
In May, AMW Host John Walsh will present the 2012 AMW All-Star winner with a check for $10,000 at a ceremony in Washington DC. The winner will also receive a trip to the NASCAR SPRINT Cup Series™ All-Star Challenge at the Charlotte Motor Speedway in Charlotte, NC. Visit AMW.com/AllStar for more information.
