The U.S. Fire Administration (USFA) has released their preliminary statistics on firefighter fatalities for 2012. According to the report, there were 83 line-of-duty deaths, the same number as in 2011.
Some of the significant statistics for 2012 include:
- 41 percent of the fatalities were from heart attacks, 32 percent from trauma.
- 60 percent of the firefighters were between the ages of 41 and 60.
- Volunteer firefighters accounted for 48 percent of firefighter fatalities.
- PA and NC each had 9 firefighter deaths, tying for highest.
The 2012 statistics are provisional and are likely to change as USFA contacts state fire marshals to verify the reported LODDs during 2012. The final number of firefighter fatalities will be reported in USFA's annual firefighter fatality report, expected to be available by July.
Statistics, reports, and more information from past years are available on the USFA Firefighter Fatalities page.
