USFA Offers Cultural Competence in Risk Reduction Course: Deadline to Apply is Friday

The U.S. Fire Administration is offering a new course entitled Cultural Competence in Risk Reduction. The class will be held at the National Fire Academy (NFA) in Emmitsburg, MD, from January 6-11, 2013. Applications for all First Semester 2013 NFA classes must be postmarked by June 15, so apply today.

This six-day course seeks to improve cultural and linguistic determinants within the application of risk-reduction strategies. The course aims to connect fire/emergency medical services (EMS) prevention personnel with diverse and cultural groups with the community(s) they serve, specifically to increase the reach and effectiveness of fire/life safety prevention services and programs. Students learn the building blocks of culture including concept of self, personal versus societal responsibility, concept of time, and locus of control.
