Thin Blue Line Act Increases Penalty for Targeting a Public Safety Officer

The Thin Blue Line Act (H.R. 99/S. 1508) would make killing a public safety officer because of their status as a public safety officer an “aggravating factor” in federal death penalty cases. The bill, which the National Volunteer Fire Council supports, specifies that the public safety officer must have been targeted while he or she was acting in the line of duty, or because of his or her status as a public safety officer. H.R. 99 was introduced by Representative Vern Buchanan (R-FL) and S. 1508 was introduced by Senator Pat Toomey (R-PA).
