Take and Share the 2020 Safety Stand Down Quiz to Encourage Responder Roadway Safety
April 30, 2020
The 2020 Fire Service Safety Stand Down Quiz Sweepstakes is now live. The informative and interactive online quiz is designed to reinforce the safety messages that are part of this year’s Safety Stand Down theme, “Building a Super Highway to Safety – Protecting our Responders on Roadways.”
Each year, the National Volunteer Fire Council, International Association of Fire Chiefs Safety, Health, and Survival Section, and the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) organize the Safety Stand Down campaign and quiz to bring attention to a particular responder safety concern. This year’s initiative highlights safety measures to protect firefighters, EMS providers, and other emergency personnel while responding to roadway incidents.
Responders are encouraged to refresh their roadside safety techniques and learn new skills based on current research, nationally recognized best practices, and the growing number of distracted drivers behind the wheel today. Emergency services personnel are also asked to take and promote the Safety Stand Down quiz, which features 12 questions and is now available at www.nfpa.org/fireservicequiz. Those who complete the quiz by Wednesday, June 17, will be automatically entered in a sweepstakes; 200 randomly selected participants will win a limited-edition challenge coin commemorating this year’s Safety Stand Down theme.
During the week of June 14-20, agencies across the country are encouraged to suspend all non-emergency activities and focus on training and education related to this year’s Safety Stand Down theme. An entire week is provided to ensure that all shifts and personnel can participate.
“Responders performing their duties on roadways are increasingly at risk, given the number of motorists using their mobile phones and multi-tasking while driving these days,” said Curt Floyd, NFPA’s fire service technical lead and a former deputy fire chief. “The 2020 Safety Stand Down campaign and quiz reinforce the importance of staying alert and operating safely while providing emergency services on the side of the road.”
Resources to plan for and participate in Safety Stand Down are available at www.safetystanddown.org. The event is supported by national and international fire and emergency service organizations, including ResponderSafety.com who assisted in the quiz development.
