Saturday is Wildfire Community Preparedness Day
April 28, 2015
For communities in the wildland-urban interface (WUI), wildfires are a very real threat to lives and property. Wildfire Community Preparedness Day is this Saturday, May 2, and many are using this opportunity to hold awareness and preparedness events for their communities.
Your fire department or Fire Corps team can help your community become more fire adapted and better prepared for the next wildfire. The Wildland Fire Assessment Program (WFAP), a partnership between the National Volunteer Fire Council and the U.S. Forest Service, teaches volunteer firefighters and support teams to conduct safety assessments for homes in the WUI. By providing these assessments, your department will help community members identify their risks and take steps to protect their homes from the next wildfire.
Use Saturday to take the online WFAP course, or schedule an in-person train-the-trainer course for your department or association. Also access resources for implementing an assessment program in your community.
When it comes to a wildfire, the question is not if, but when. Make sure your community is ready.
