Retirement Tax Bill Including Volunteer Responder Incentive Protection Act on Hold in Senate

The SECURE Act (H.R. 1994), which passed the House of Representatives in May, makes a number of changes to retirement tax law and reinstates the Volunteer Responder Incentive Protection Act for the 2020 tax year. The National Volunteer Fire Council has been urging the Senate to pass the SECURE Act as part of a coalition that took out an ad in The Hill and sent a letter to Senate leadership within the past month.

An effort in the Senate to pass the SECURE Act failed on November 6, when Senator Pat Toomey (R-PA) asked for unanimous consent to bring H.R. 1994 up for consideration and to make amendments in order. Senator Patty Murray (D-WA) asked Toomey to amend his request to allow for a vote on the bill without modification. An agreement could not be reached and H.R. 1994 was not brought up for consideration (click here for more information about what happened on November 6).
