NVFC Partners with CSX to Provide Training Scholarships

Apply for an all-expense paid trip for weeklong rail incident training

CSX-train-1The National Volunteer Fire Council (NVFC) has partnered with CSX, a transportation company providing rail, intermodal, and rail-to-truck transload services, to provide scholarships to help more first responders attend their hands-on rail response training programs. Three NVFC members will be selected to receive an all-expense-paid trip to attend a weeklong course at the CSX Railroad Education and Training Institute in Atlanta, GA. Applications are due by May 15 – apply now.

The recipients of the three scholarships will each be able to attend one of the following two courses:

  • CSX Responder Outreach Unit Train Emergencies – August 14-18, 2016
Attendees of this training will have the opportunity to see first-hand the resources and capabilities that the CSX Hazardous Material Team, Corporate Social Responsibility, Industrial Hygiene, CSX Police, and other CSX services supply to the communities in which they operate. Attendees experience some of the same hands-on training that the CSX team – as well as CSX emergency response contractors – complete in order to ensure the safest response to railroad emergencies in the industry.
  • CSX HazMat Sentinel Class – October 17-20, 2016
Designed to be an advanced, fast-paced class, this course covers Tank Car 101, Highway/Intermodal, Railroad Incident Management, Damage Assessment, Transfers, RR Security, Hot Tapping, grounding and bonding, and many more hands-on rail car trainings. This 40-hour course is specific to railroad hazardous materials emergency response.

The scholarship covers all travel, lodging, and transportation expenses, including hotel, meals, round-trip airfare, and/or mileage. In addition, there will be no fee for the training. No reimbursement is provided for missed wages or other personal costs of attending.

To be eligible, applicants must reside in a community in CSX’s service area. Additionally, applicants or their department must be a member of the NVFC. Membership options and benefits can be found at www.nvfc.org/BeYourBest. Only one individual per department is eligible to receive the award. Recipients must be available to attend the course they select on their application form. Winners will be announced by mid-June.
