NVFC Hosts Make Me A Firefighter Training
August 18, 2015
The National Volunteer Fire Council (NVFC) gave attendees of the South Atlantic Fire Rescue Expo an in-depth look at the resources available through the new Make Me A Firefighter campaign during two training sessions held on August 14. Hosted in Raleigh, NC, the Expo served as the perfect venue for kicking-off the pilot phase of the NVFC’s national recruitment and retention campaign.
Participants were provided an overview of the campaign research and best practices when it comes to recruiting new volunteers. They were then guided through the tools and resources available in campaign’s department portal and were able to navigate the features firsthand on their smartphones, tablets, and laptops. Attendees were also encouraged to post their volunteer opportunities through the portal.

Make Me A Firefighter is the first national volunteer recruitment campaign of its kind. The department portal allows fire and EMS departments to post their volunteer opportunities in a searchable database, utilize a materials generator to customize campaign materials for local audiences, access campaign messaging designed to reach underrepresented populations, and find tools and training to help create a successful local recruitment campaign.
The pilot phase of the campaign will allow for targeted implementation and evaluation of the components prior to the official campaign launch later this year. The NVFC will test various campaign elements throughout North Carolina in the coming weeks. Additional pilot training and testing will be held in October in North Dakota.
