NVFC Endorses Federal Legislation on PPE Safety and the T-Band Radio Spectrum

At the National Volunteer Fire Council’s fall meeting, the board adopted resolutions endorsing the Guaranteeing Equipment Safety for Firefighters Act (S. 2525) and the Don’t Break Up the T-Band Act (H.R. 451/S. 2748).

The Guaranteeing Equipment Safety for Firefighters Act directs the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) to study firefighter personal protective equipment (PPE) to examine:

  • the prevalence and concentration of per- and polyfluoralkyl substance (PFAS),
  • the extent to which PFAS is released into the environment over time as PPE degrades, and
  • the risk of exposure that firefighters face based on both of those factors.

It also directs NIST to establish a grant program to research safe alternatives to PFAS in PPE.

The Don’t Break Up the T-Band Act repeals a statutory requirement for the Federal Communications Commission to reallocate and auction the T-Band radio spectrum.
