NVFC Chairman Visits CSX Railroad Education and Development Institute
May 31, 2016
National Volunteer Fire Council (NVFC) Chairman Kevin D. Quinn attended the CSX Railroad Responder Outreach for Unit Train Emergencies course on May 23-26 at the CSX Railroad Education and Development Institute (REDI) in Atlanta, GA. The visit was part of an ongoing partnership between the NVFC and CSX to improve the safety and effectiveness of emergency personnel responding to rail incidents.
The course took place at CSX’s state of the art REDI facility and provided a comprehensive curriculum that included education, a field tour, and hands-on training. Presentations covered a wide range of topics, from tank car evolution and locomotive maintenance, to community affairs, law enforcement, crude oil, and hazmat chemistry.
“CSX has a strong commitment to safety, and that is evident throughout the training curriculum offered to first responders,” said Quinn. “I strongly recommend this free training to all boots-on-the-ground volunteer firefighters located within the rail corridor. I was pleased to be able to take part in one of the courses, and I look forward to a continued partnership with CSX to improve responder safety at rail incidents.”
In addition to offering training at the REDI facility, CSX has also launched an app to enhance response related to rail emergencies. CSX Rail Respond provides critical information that is needed for situational awareness and effective decision making during the management of a rail incident. Learn more.
CSX also offered scholarships to three NVFC members to attend training at the REDI facility later this year. The scholarships covered all travel, lodging, and transportation expenses to enable more volunteers to attend a week-long training course. Recipients of these scholarships will be announced soon.
