Wrapping up a two-year project involving national EMS stakeholder organizations, including the National Volunteer Fire Council, the National Association of State EMS Officials (NASEMSO) has submitted a final draft of the EMS Workforce Planning and Development Guidelines for State Adoption to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration for review and approval.

NASEMSO proposed to demonstrate at a national level that systematic workforce evaluation and planning is vital for ensuring a robust and capable EMS workforce. This effort will yield state EMS workforce data collection, planning, and development guidelines. An invitational National Stakeholder Meeting was held in Washington, DC on July 25, 2013. The draft guidelines include changes as recommended by the Stakeholder Meeting participants.

The EMS Workforce Planning and Development Guidelines for State Adoption provides recommendations and strategies in the form of 10 guidelines for State EMS Offices in order to encourage and guide them in a collective effort to address core workforce issues.
