It’s National Preparedness Month: You Can Be the Hero

September is National Preparedness Month, and this year’s theme is “You Can Be the Hero.” Use this month to make sure your department is ready for disasters of all kind and to encourage your community to be prepared.
FEMA asks that stakeholders promote preparedness by joining the National Preparedness Community, finding or creating preparedness events in your community, joining regional groups in your area to connect and build relationships, and share best practices with other stakeholders. Use the National Preparedness Month Toolkit to find template newsletter articles, blogs, posters, and other materials to use in your internal and external communications.
The National Volunteer Fire Council also has a myriad of resources to help you, your department, and your community be prepared:
- Prepare your department by making sure all personnel follow the B.E.S.T. Priorities for Health and Safety.
- Prepare yourself by getting healthy, fit, and ready to respond with the Heart-Healthy Firefighter Program.
- Prepare your community through the use of Fire Corps volunteers to provide emergency preparedness and fire prevention education, develop preparedness plans, conduct home safety checks and smoke alarm installations, assist with disaster drills, and more.
- Prepare for the future of your department with the National Junior Firefighter Program, which fosters the next generation of firefighters, EMTs, and emergency responders.
- Prepare your responders through free training from the NVFC and Fire Corps.
- Prepare for the next federal grant cycle with the NVFC’s grant-writing tools, resources, and webinars.
