Firefighters Win Big with California Casualty
July 6, 2013

Across the nation, members of the NVFC can access auto and home insurance programs from California Casualty. The nearly 100-year-old company serves four distinct niches – firefighters, peace officers, educators, and nurses – and does not sell to the general public. This results in unique features specific to the needs of each profession – such as coverage of turnout gear for firefighters – as well as a variety of discounts.
California Casualty supports firefighters in other ways, too, “giving back” in the form of special recognitions and big-prize contests.
Imagine if your firehouse won the California Casualty Firehouse Makeover, like the Thomson Fire Department in Georgia did earlier this year. The firefighters there got new furnishings, bedding, TVs, kitchen appliances, washers and dryers, and overall a much more comfortable “second home.”
“We created the contest to honor the hard work and sacrifice of these first responders,” said California Casualty executive Mike McCormick. “They deserve a warm, inviting, and functional space to relax and recharge in when they’re not out on call.”
Entries for the next California Casualty Firehouse Makeover can be made online at www.firehousemakeover.com. The deadline is September 30, 2013.
How much easier would it be to unwind after your shift if you had a shiny new Harley Davidson to go cruising on, or a zippy Polaris ATV to play with off-road?
Volunteer paramedic and EMS Instructor Ellie Platt of Huber Heights, OH, won the ATV a year ago and has donated use of the vehicle for many events, investigations, and other activities of her local fire department. Pennsylvania firefighter Robert LaMantia won a Harley Davidson from California Casualty a few months before that.
Both Platt and LaMantia entered different contests that fall under the company’s “Work Hard, Play Hard” promotion umbrella. The current contest will deliver one lucky winner a Bass Boat – or $10,000 in cash. Enter before July 12, 2013, at http://marketing.mycalcas.com/bassboat.
Monthly winners in the California Casualty’s ongoing Nominate a Hero contest receive a $250 gift card (and their nominators get one for $50!). Winners are determined by who receives the most votes. All of the monthly winners will be posted online as a group on November 1, and a new round of voting will reveal which of them will receive the grand prize – a $10,000 luxury vacation. Nominations can be made through October 13, 2013, at www.nominatemyhero.com/. Grand prize voting begins in November, and the winner will be identified in December.
California Casualty will observe its 100th Anniversary in early 2014 – a significant achievement for a family-owned business.
