CMS Launching Medicare Ground Ambulance Data Collection System

Beginning January 1, 2020, and continuing through 2024, EMS agencies that bill Medicare for ambulance transport services will be required to collect information on cost, utilization, revenue, and other service characteristics for one continuous 12-month period. A list of agencies selected by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) to participate in the Medicare Ground Ambulance Data Collection System in 2020 can be accessed here.

CMS is collecting this data in response to legislation passed by Congress in 2018, which requires the Secretary of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to collect cost, revenue, utilization, and other information deemed appropriate by the Secretary from providers and suppliers of ground ambulance services.

The full Medicare Ground Ambulance Data Collection Instrument survey can be accessed here. CMS has also developed a quick reference guide as well as a frequently asked questions webpage.

The Medicare Learning Network is hosting a webinar at 1:30pm eastern on December 5 to discuss the new data collection system. Anyone interested in participating can register here.
