Volunteer with Fire Corps
Thank you for your interest in serving your local community as a non-emergency volunteer with your local fire/EMS department. Fire Corps members play a vital role in the departments and communities they serve. These dedicated volunteers directly impact the safety and well-being of their community while supporting their local first responders and increasing services the fire/EMS department can offer.
You can make a difference in your community! Whatever your skills, there is a need for you as a support member of your local fire/EMS department. By performing the non-emergency tasks your department needs, you will free up the first responders to focus their efforts on life-threatening situations as they happen. You can also help increase or enhance the life-saving services your department provides in the community, such as fire safety education, preparedness planning, and more. At the same time, you will gain a greater understanding of the fire and emergency services and become better prepared to handle your own emergencies as well as those of your neighbors.

What to Expect
As a Fire Corps volunteer, you can expect to assist your department with non-emergency tasks. Your efforts will play a critical role in making your community safer, stronger, and better prepared for emergencies of all kinds.
The activities performed by Fire Corps members vary greatly depending on the needs of your local department as well as your interests and skill-sets, but the list below should give you an idea of the types of opportunities that may be available:
- Teach fire safety and prevention in schools and the community
- Perform safety checks and install smoke alarms in area homes
- Distribute disaster preparedness materials
- Provide needed water and refreshments to first responders at major incidents
- Develop or maintain the department’s web site
- Help with grant writing and fundraising
- Provide administrative and clerical support
- Assist with mitigation measures such as removing unruly vegetation that poses a fire risk near structures, identifying safety hazards to homeowners, etc.
- Assist departments with community programs, such as roadside cleanup, food drives, and toy collections for families in need
- Assist with preparedness efforts, including planning for quick access to stocks of emergency supplies, shelter readiness, and procedure review
- Provide post-disaster support for victims of fires and other incidents
- Assist with public relations
- Compile the department’s newsletter
- Translate materials for non-English speaking populations
