NVFC Academy: On-site Training
The NVFC offers in-person training on topics of critical importance to the fire and emergency services. For on-site training, the NVFC will deliver the program or programs you choose at your fire department, fire academy, or other location. Our instructor-led programs include half-day, full-day, and multi-day training sessions and workshops. Some workshops and half-day sessions may be combined for reduced pricing. Health & Safety
NVFC-101: Health & Wellness Advocate Workshop
This train-the-trainer workshop provides participants with the basic principles behind developing sound health and wellness programs at the firehouse. The two-day workshop includes an overview of fitness and looks at the areas of anatomy, physiology, and biomechanics, which are the building blocks for designing a safe and effective exercise program. Participants are given guidance on establishing health and fitness goals, safety and injury prevention, exercise and stress management, and how to develop a safe exercise program utilizing five components of fitness. Lessons on nutrition, healthy eating, and weight management are also provided. In addition, attendees may participate in a demonstration of functional training exercises which can be easily utilized at the firehouse with minimal equipment. Participants are provided with a Fit Kit and a curriculum binder that can be used to improve upon or begin a health and wellness program within their department.

NVFC-102: Behavioral Health Workshop
This three-hour course empowers participants to be advocates for behavioral health and wellness within their department. Issues covered include recognizing the stressors of the job in yourself and others, resources available to first responders and families, and finding the plan that works for your department. Safety Top Our Priorities (S.T.O.P)
This training series on vehicle safety includes four 30-minute sessions and educates participants on the importance of using a seatbelt, slowing down, stopping, and using spotters. Since 1984, vehicle collisions have accounted for 20-25% of firefighter fatalities each year along with countless injuries, yet only 21% of those killed in motor vehicle accidents were wearing a seatbelt. The courses in this series examine how to encourage safety when responding to emergencies and how seatbelt use and safe vehicle operations can be enforced at the department level. Course materials and certificates of completion are provided.

NVFC-120: Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
Participants will learn about the physiology of heat stress, what Total Heat Loss (THL) really means, and how it can be applied in the choosing the right PPE. This presentation bridges the science behind personal protective equipment with real world applications. Course materials and certificates of completion provided.

Recruitment and Retention
NVFC-201: Effective Recruitment and Retention
The workshop focuses on retention and recruitment in the volunteer fire service, delves into the reasons why there has been a decline in the number of volunteers, and addresses recommendations and solutions to retention and recruitment challenges. NVFC -301: Grant Writing Workshop
This workshop educates volunteer fire and emergency service personnel on how write a successful grant narrative in an effort to secure funding for their local fire/EMS department and provides specific examples of award-winning grant narratives. Developed in partnership with the U.S. Fire Administration, this workshop provides important information on available grants from the government and other sources. Course materials and certificates of completion are provided.

NVFC-401: From Volunteer to Combination: Making the Transition
This workshop examines the problems and challenges faced by departments making the transition from volunteer to combination. Topics covered include merging departments, personnel conflicts, adjusting to the presence of paid staff, managing growth and increased call volume, and recruitment and retention. Course materials and certificates of completion provided.

Reputation Management
NVFC-501: Social Media for the Fire Service
Participants will learn how to use social media as an effective recruitment tool while avoiding pitfalls of instant information. Best practices in social media will be addressed along with why social media policies are important and what they should include. Course materials and certificates of completion are provided.

Fire Corps Training
FC-100: Introduction to Fire Corps
FC-100 is designed for fire chiefs, department personnel, municipal officials, and other interested parties who want to learn about the fundamentals of Fire Corps. The session provides an overview of how the Fire Corps program is organized and introduces the benefits, depth, and scope of community volunteer activities in fire and emergency service departments. FC-100 also identifies the basic steps and components to building the infrastructure of a local Fire Corps program. Course materials and certificates of completion are provided.

FC-200: Starting and Implementing a Fire Corps Program
FC-200 provides information and activities to train fire department personnel and/or Fire Corps volunteers who oversee or who will oversee or manage a Fire Corps program. This session teaches how to successfully grow a program along with avoiding and mitigating issues that slow or hinder healthy growth. Participants will learn about various volunteer management practices and be provided with sample documents and tips to help sustain and further their programs. Course materials and certificates of completion are provided.

FC-301: Fire Corps in Disaster Response
FC-301 provides information and activities to train fire department personnel and/or Fire Corps volunteers who oversee or who will oversee or manage a Fire Corps program. This session is designed to show how Fire Corps fits into a community’s disaster response efforts. Because Fire Corps teams already assist fire and EMS departments in their duties to keep the community safe, Fire Corps volunteers can also be used to start, improve, or enhance a fire department’s disaster response efforts. Course materials and certificates of completion are provided.

National Junior Firefighter Program Training
JR-100: National Junior Firefighter Academy
The National Junior Firefighter Academy is a comprehensive one-day workshop featuring classroom and hands-on training for both junior firefighters and program advisors. Classroom instruction focuses on youth leadership, program fundraising, activity ideas, and more. Hands-on coursework will be modified for the laws in your state, but could include auto extrication, EMS, first aid, basic firefighting, and HazMat training. The goal of the Academy is to provide a turn-key training experience to junior firefighters, junior firefighter program advisors, and other department leaders. The Academy can be brought to trade shows, conferences, and departments nationwide and customized for each local market. Course materials and certificates of completion are provided.
