Volunteer Fire Assistance (VFA) Program
This is a federal grant program administered by the U.S. Forest Service through the state foresters. Rural fire departments that protect communities with populations under 10,000 apply for 50/50 matching grants to subsidize training, equipment, and protective clothing to help them prepare for wildland fires. VFA received $13.8 million in FY 2009 and $16 million in FY 2010. In the President’s budget for FY 2011, the VFA total is $14 million.
