National EMS Education Standards Now Available
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s Office of EMS announced on February 4 that the final National EMS Education Standards (NEMSES) have been posted on www.EMS.gov. Also posted are the corresponding Instructional Guidelines for Emergency Medical Responder (EMR), Emergency Medical Technician (EMT), Advanced EMT (AEMT), and Paramedic.
For this project, NHTSA and the Health Resources and Services Administration partnered with the National Association of EMS Educators to develop the new EMS education standards. Called for in The EMS Education Agenda for the Future: A Systems Approach, these standards are set to replace the current U.S. Department of Transportation National Standard Curricula.
The National Volunteer Fire Council was among the stakeholder groups that provided input that was used to develop the NEMSES. These standards will be used to assist EMS educators and program managers and to help develop instructional materials. According to the NEMSES web site at www.nemses.org, the standards were designed around the National EMS Scope of Practice Model and will provide base-level learning objectives. The new education standards are meant to increase EMS program flexibility, encourage creativity, and advance alternative delivery methods.
