Fire Service Scores Victory with Passage of
The NVFC, along with other major fire service organizations, scored
a victory in the 105th Congress with the passage of the Rescue &
Emergency Services Prepared for Our Nation's Defense Act. This
legislation was introduced by Representative Curt Weldon (PA) and was
passed as part of the FY 1999 National Defense Authorization Act.
The legislation establishes a Commission to assess the United
States' capabilities to respond to incidents resulting from the use of
weapons of mass destruction. The Commission will look at ensuring
effective local response capabilities, establishing compatible
communications capabilities for Federal, State, and Local emergency
responders, providing adequate equipment for response efforts, and
developing pre-planning efforts to ensure the effective execution of
emergency response efforts.
