Tyco International Donates to National Junior Firefighter Program

Tyco International has signed on as a supporter of the NVFC’s National Junior Firefighter Program. Representatives from Tyco announced the donation during the NVFC Spring Board Meeting on April 3. The company will sponsor several new components of the program as well as support existing program initiatives.

“Tyco is proud to enter into this partnership with the National Volunteer Fire Council to support and enhance the Junior Firefighter Program,” said George Oliver, President of Tyco Safety Products. “As a leader in fire protection, fire detection and fire suppression, Tyco is committed to supporting non-profit organizations that are committed to life safety.”

“We are so pleased to work with Tyco to expand the National Junior Firefighter Program and further youth involvement in the fire and emergency services,” said Heather Schafer, NVFC Executive Director. “Tyco recognizes that the future of the fire service is our youth and that we need to encourage youth involvement in the emergency services now in order to ensure the service remains strong in the future. Tyco is committed to serving first responders and their involvement will be an asset to the National Junior Firefighter Program.”

Tyco’s support will enable the NVFC to launch several new components of the National Junior Firefighter Program, including two new competitive national awards that will launch in the spring of 2010. The Junior Firefighter of the Year Award will recognize the achievements and efforts of an outstanding junior firefighter, and the Junior Department of the Year Award will honor a department with an innovative and exceptional junior firefighter program.

Furthermore, Tyco’s support will go towards providing incentives as part of the program’s recognition and reward component. The National Junior Firefighter Program enables juniors from across the country to log in their hours of service in order to receive rewards and recognition as they reach certain benchmarks.

Tyco’s donation will also allow the NVFC to continue administering other program components, such as the interactive online database and the bi-monthly Junior Firefighter E-news. Tyco International will become a member of the National Junior Firefighter Program’s Advisory Committee and will provide valuable insight and input for the direction and future of the program. Other members of the Advisory Group include representatives from the NVFC Board of Directors, local junior firefighter programs, and corporate sponsors.

The National Junior Firefighter Program was launched in 2007 and serves as a national umbrella to local junior firefighter programs nationwide.  The program provides the resources, tools, and information that departments and youth need to develop, expand, promote, and participate in a local junior firefighter program. Other corporate sponsors of the National Junior Firefighter Program include Baskin-Robbins, the Dunkin’ Brands Community Foundation, and Spartan Motors.
