Fire Spokesperson’s Pocket Media Guide Now Available

Over the last several years, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s National Center for Injury Prevention and Control has been working closely with the U. S. Fire Administration and the Consumer Product Safety Commission to redevelop and enhance the resources and tools offered to the media and to fire service spokespeople on the FireSafety.gov web site. One of the newest tools on the site is the Fire Spokesperson’s Pocket Media Guide, which explains how Public Information Officers and other fire spokespeople can maximize the impact of a fire safety message in interviews with local and national news media.

The Pocket Media Guide shows you how to make the most of “teachable moments” – media interviews following a fire, when the public’s interest and attention are at a peak. In addition to providing the facts about the fire, you can share one or more messages that encourage the viewer/reader to take action that could save a life. Learning how to maximize the impact of a fire safety message in interviews with local and national news media can help your community take preventive measures to reduce the tragic loss of life and injuries from residential fires.

Download the Fire Spokesperson’s Pocket Media Guide and find additional resources at www.firesafety.gov. FireSafety.gov is a federally-operated web site that serves as a clearinghouse for fire-related information. It includes vital information, life-saving tips and tools, statistics, and more for the fire service, the media and Public Information Officers, citizens, and kids.
