It’s National Preparedness Month: Make Sure Your Community Is Ready

Disaster can take on a myriad of shapes and strike at any time, and it is important that community members are ready. September is National Preparedness Month, and now is the perfect time to reinvigorate your community to be prepared as well as ensure your department is ready for disasters and emergencies of all kinds.

Sponsored by the Ready Campaign and Citizen Corps and supported by organizations including the National Volunteer Fire Council (NVFC), National Preparedness Month encourages Americans to take simple steps to prepare for emergencies in their homes, businesses, communities, and schools. National Preparedness Month 2009 focuses on changing perceptions about emergency preparedness and what it truly means to be Ready. The theme is designed to teach community members that preparedness goes beyond fire alarms, smoke detectors, dead-bolt locks, and extra food in the pantry, as well as to help citizens communicate important preparedness messages to their families, businesses, and communities.

Learn more about National Preparedness Month and access resources, including ready-to-use public service announcements, at www.ready.gov. You can also find additional preparedness resources for your department and community from the NVFC at www.nvfc.org/preparedness and from Fire Corps at www.firecorps.org/npm. Don’t wait until it is too late – make sure your department and community are ready when disaster strikes.
