NVFC Issues Policy Statements, Updates Legislative Positions at Spring Meeting
The National Volunteer Fire Council's (NVFC) Board of Directors adopted policy statements on several issues and updated the Council's position on several pieces of legislation at the annual Spring Board Meeting, held March 31-April 4 in Alexandria, VA. Read full article.
FLAME Act Passes House
On March 26, the United States House of Representatives voted 412-3 to pass HR 1404, the Federal Land Assistance, Management, and Enhancement (FLAME) Act. Introduced by Congressman Nick J. Rahall II (D-WV), the FLAME Act calls for a supplemental funding source for catastrophic emergency wildland fire suppression activities on federal land. Read full article.
Congressman King reintroduces Volunteer Emergency Services Recruitment and Retention Act
Congressmen Peter King (R-NY), along with original co-sponsors Bill Pascrell (D-NJ), Joseph Crowley (D-NY), and Heath Schuler (D-NC), reintroduced the Volunteer Emergency Services Recruitment and Retention Act (HR 1792) on March 30. Read full article.
NVFC Elects Officers, Tackles Important Issues at Annual Spring Meeting
The National Volunteer Fire Council's (NVFC) Board of Directors held its annual Spring Board Meeting on March 31-April 4 in Alexandria, VA, just outside of Washington, DC. Representatives from 42 state fire associations attended the meeting, which featured action taken on many important issues, Officer and Executive Committee elections, bestowment of several awards, and a lineup of prominent speakers. Tyco International Donates to National Junior Firefighter Program
Tyco International has signed on as a supporter of the NVFC's National Junior Firefighter Program. Representatives from Tyco announced the donation during the NVFC Spring Board Meeting on April 3. The company will sponsor several new components of the program as well as support existing program initiatives. Read full article.
NVFC Bestows 2009 Fire Prevention Award to Edward Sawicki
The National Volunteer Fire Council (NVFC) honored Edward Sawicki with the 2009 NVFC Fire Prevention Award, sponsored by First Alert. Sawicki accepted the Award during a special banquet at the NVFC's Spring Board Meeting in Alexandria, VA, on April 3. Read full article.
Sen. Susan Collins Receives NVFC Legislator of the Year Award
Senator Susan Collins (R-ME) was presented with the National Volunteer Fire Council (NVFC) Legislator of the Year Award on April 2 during the annual Spring Board Meeting in Washington, DC. NVFC Chairman Philip C. Stittleburg presented Sen. Collins with the award at a ceremony held inside of the United States Capitol building.Read full article.
USFA Announces Arson Awareness Week Theme for 2009

The United States Fire Administration (USFA) announced that the theme for the 2009 Arson Awareness Week is "Arson for Profit." USFA and its partners, including the National Volunteer Fire Council, will use the week of May 3-9 to focus public attention on the alarming statistics about Arson for Profit in the hopes of expanding the resources and support necessary to reduce this crime. CHEMTREC Releases DVD to Assist First Responders
When faced with an incident involving hazardous materials or dangerous goods, emergency responders need quick access to a reliable resource that can provide critical and immediate assistance directly to the scene. CHEMTREC (Chemical Transportation Emergency Center) is a 24/7/365 emergency call center that provides immediate information and assistance to anyone involved in a hazardous materials incident. April 19-25 is National Volunteer Week: "Celebrating People in Action"
There are over 1 million volunteer first responders and 14,300 active Fire Corps volunteers nationwide. National Volunteer Week, which starts on April 19, provides an opportunity to recognize the efforts of these volunteers as well as to promote the spirit of volunteerism among the general population.
