September 11 Remembered

Today is the seventh anniversary of the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, and the National Volunteer Fire Council (NVFC) joins with the rest of the country in commemorating the tragic events of that day. Read full article.

Hurricane Gustav Tests National, State, and Local Emergency Response Capabilities

There was no holiday for government and emergency officials this Labor Day as Hurricane Gustav hit Louisiana, summoning painful memories of the devastation caused by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita in 2005. Read full article.

As demonstrated by the recent hurricane and storm activity in different parts of the country, we need to be diligent in preparing our communities for disasters of all kinds. Help First Responders in Need: Contribute to the NVFC Volunteer Firefighter Support Fund

Last week, Hurricane Gustav ripped through the Gulf Coast, leaving over 800,000 households without power and causing flooding and destruction in several states, including Louisiana, Mississippi, and Arkansas. Hurricane Ike is poised to strike Texas and possibly other Gulf Coast states later this week and hurricane season is far from over. Read full article.

Focus on Recruitment and Retention: NVFC Supports Increasing Tax Deductions for Volunteers Responding in Personal Vehicles

The National Volunteer Fire Council (NVFC) supports several pieces of legislation that would increase the income tax deduction that volunteers of all types can claim for miles driven in personal vehicles for charitable purposes. The deduction helps to reimburse drivers for the cost of purchasing fuel as well as wear and tear on their vehicles. Read full article.

Become a Health and Fitness Advocate for Your Department

The NVFC Heart-Healthy Firefighter Program, in partnership with L&T Health and Fitness, is launching hosting a free Health and Fitness Advocate Workshop at the NVFC headquarters in Greenbelt, MD, September 20-21. This program is designed to combat the leading cause of line-of-duty firefighter deaths – heart attack – by creating health and fitness advocates within fire/EMS departments. Read full article.
