NFPA Report Shows Dangerous Aging Trend in Firefighters Protecting Small Communities

For the first time since the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) began tracking the age of firefighters by community size in 1987, the majority of firefighters protecting communities of fewer than 2,500 are 40 years of age or older. In 1987, more than 63 percent of firefighters protecting communities of 2,500 or less were under the age of 40. There are slightly more than 400,000 firefighters (out of 1.15 million total) protecting communities with populations of 2,500 or less, including 399,000 volunteer firefighters. Read full article.

Reminder: SAFER Grant Applications Due December 18

The deadline for the FY 2009 Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Services (SAFER) Grants is December 18 at 5:00 p.m. Eastern Time. SAFER grants help departments with volunteer recruitment and retention programs as well as with hiring personnel. Make sure to get your application in on time to be considered for a grant. Vote for the NVFC Foundation in Facebook Giveaway

Facebook has teamed with JP Morgan Chase to donate $5 million to charities. The joint effort, called Chase Community Giving, allows the social networking site's more than 300 million users to vote for the charity of their choice from among 5,000 nonprofit organizations. Vote for the National Volunteer Fire Council Foundation to be one of the 100 charities that will win $25,000.

NVFC Recruiting First Responders for New Survey on Communications and Information Needs
Results will inform new geointelligence system under development by the Department of Homeland Security; Chance to win gift card

The National Volunteer Fire Council (NVFC) has again partnered with ElanTech to gather critical data from the first response emergency personnel nationwide. The two organizations have joined to offer a second online survey. The data collected will influence the design of an advanced new incident command software application in development by ElanTech for the National Institute for Hometown Security (NIHS) through the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).

Call for Entries: Submit a Nomination for the NVFC’s Annual Awards

Each year the NVFC honors a firefighter who has provided a lifetime of service to the volunteer fire service, as well as a volunteer firefighter whose accomplishments exemplify the philosophy of fire prevention. New in 2010, the NVFC is introducing two additional awards to honor an outstanding junior firefighter and an exemplary junior firefighter program. Nominations for all four awards are due February 12.

NVFC Introduces Junior Membership Level

The NVFC offers a new membership option for junior firefighters. A year-long Junior Membership to the NVFC can now be purchased for just $10 at www.nvfc.org/membership. The membership will become active on January 1, 2010.

NFA Second Semester Application Period Closes December 15

The National Fire Academy’s (NFA) Fiscal Year 2010 second semester application period is open now through December 15. The second semester includes classes running from April 1 through September 30, 2010. Interested applicants are urged to submit their completed FEMA Form 75-5, General Admissions Application right away!
