Frequently Asked Questions

Below are just a few of the topics that you may have questions about. Keep checking back-we'll be adding more topics in the near future.

What is the National Junior Firefighter Program?
The National Junior Firefighter program is a national program brought to you by the National Volunteer Fire Council and Spartan Motors that supports fire, rescue, and EMS organizations nationwide to develop, grow, and promote programs that encourage participation by youth within the organizations. Through our web site, you can find out how to join a local fire, rescue or EMS organization, keep track of your hours, and earn exciting rewards after spending a set number of hours helping the organization.

How old do I need to be to participate?
The ages of participation vary by your local department, based on their local and state requirements, and other factors. The age ranges are typically listed in the online profile of the organizations program within our search system, although, in some cases, you may need to contact them directly.

What are the other requirements to participate?
The overall program requirements are different from organization to organization, but generally you must be in good academic standing with your school ('C' average in coursework); fulfill the minimum age requirements as outlined by the participating organization; be able to participate the minimum number of hours each month (typically at least one four-hour block monthly, although individual programs have specific date/time requirements); and have your parents or guardians written permission to participate. Once you contact a local participating organization, they will give you a full overview of their specific program, including individual requirements.

How can I find a local fire, rescue or EMS organization that participates?
Our web site offers a searchable database of many existing known programs in the local fire, rescue and EMS service of communities nationwide. You may search the database by zip code or state and quickly scroll down and find a program near you. Once you do, simply contact the program directly, and then return to this site to register and join the program. You will then be able to keep track of your hours and will automatically receive rewards at certain milestones. If you are unable to find an organization in your area, contact your local department to find out if they have an unlisted program.

What is the awards program?
The National Junior Firefighter program offers an annual awards program as outlined on the Awards page.

How do I use the online system?
The online system allows junior firefighters to log their hours with the organization in an easy fashion, enabling them to be eligible for unique prizes and opportunities. A full overview of the online system, including detailed instructions on how to register can be found on the User Sign-Up page.
