NVFC Junior Firefighter of the Year Award

The National Volunteer Fire Council’s (NVFC) Junior Firefighter of the Year Award, sponsored by Tyco International, honors a junior firefighter who has gone above and beyond in their service to their fire department. The 2014 awards nomination is now closed. The 2015 awards nomination period will be announced in late 2014.


Each nominee will be judged on the following criteria: 
  • Nominee has have served in a junior firefighter or Explorer program for at least one full year
  • Nominee has truly gone above and beyond the normal call of duty for a junior firefighter in their commitment to the fire and emergency services
  • Nominee is registered with the National Junior Firefighter Program (registration is free at


The selection of the NVFC Junior Firefighter of the Year Award recipient will be determined through a nationwide nomination process. The winner will be recognized at a special Awards Banquet in conjunction with the NVFC spring board meeting and will receive:
  • Travel and accommodations for recipient and up to two parents/guardians to historic Alexandria, VA, just outside of Washington, DC, to attend Awards Banquet
  • $500 toward college tuition or fire service-related training activities (including travel)
  • Complimentary registration for the NVFC spring board meeting
  • Recognition as guest of honor at the Awards Banquet
  • Opportunity to spend day on Capitol Hill
  • Complimentary one-year NVFC Junior Membership
  • Personalized award
  • Place in NVFC history

Nomination Materials

Nomination packets must include:
  • Completed nomination form
  • 500-word essay describing the nominee’s contribution to their fire department, including specific examples of how they have exemplified the spirit of youth community involvement and why they should be chosen for this award
  • Two letters of recommendation, including one from department Chief or program advisor
  • No more than three additional supporting documents
