Safety Train Dedication

The Massachusetts Call/Volunteer Firefighters Association, an NVFC state member, conducted the dedication of their Safety Train, the "Bay State," on September 23, at Union Station in Washington, DC. The NVFC has been working closely with its partners in Massachusetts by awarding them a grant, as well as promoting the train, which will be used to educate emergency responders nationwide about responding to hazardous material incidents involving railroad tank cars.

"The Bay State" is a fully equipped climate controlled classroom, constructed in a fifty-foot boxcar. The interior, which resembles an old Victorian railroad station, has seating for twenty and displays all the valves used on railroad tank cars.

Since 1996, the Massachusetts Call/Volunteer Firefighters Association has worked closely with CSX Corporation and its predecessor Conrail, in securing the donation and refurbishment of rail cars that make up the Safety Train. In addition, CSX is donating the movement of the Safety Train throughout the eastern United States. The train makes 20-25 stops per year to provide hands-on training for fire, police and emergency medical responders.

"The NVFC is pleased to be a part of any endeavor that involves the partnership between corporate America and the volunteer fire service to promote safety," said NVFC Chairman Allinson.

Over the past decade rail has become the safest mode of transportation of hazardous materials as evident by a 70 percent reduction in rail accidents. At the same time, hazardous materials shipments have increased 22 percent.

The National Volunteer Fire Council is a non-profit membership association representing the interests of volunteer fire, EMS, and rescue services.
