NVFC Sustaining Member Appointed Chairman of President's Homeland Defense Advisory Council

The White House has announced that President Bush has appointed Joseph J. Grano Jr., UBS PaineWebber chairman and chief executive officer, to chair the President's Homeland Security Advisory Council. Serving with Grano will be other leaders from the private sector, state and local governments, academe, and the public and non-profit sectors to advise the President on homeland security issues. The purpose of this Council is to provide the President with advice from experts outside of the federal government. In particular, they will provide input to the President on developing and coordinating the implementation of a comprehensive national strategy to increase America's security.

Grano will maintain his full responsibilities and schedule as UBS PaineWebber chairman and chief executive officer. Commenting on the appointment, he said, "All of us in America wish there were a way to assist our President in the war to combat terrorism. I am privileged to accept President Bush's and Governor Ridge's appointment to serve as Chairman of the President's Homeland Security Advisory Council and join outstanding citizens from the public and private sector in the goal of developing solutions and strategies to secure the United States against terrorism."

UBS PaineWebber has been an NVFC supporter for a number of years. "We look forward to working with Mr. Grano to ensure that the volunteer fire service's voice is conveyed through the Advisory Council," said NVFC Chairman Philip C. Stittleburg.
