Senate Resolution Calls for Moment of Remembrance on 9/11 at 1 PM Eastern
Published Date: 09.07.2011
On July 22, the Senate unanimously agreed to S. Res. 237, “Expressing the sense of the Senate regarding coming together as a Nation and ceasing all work or other activity for a moment of remembrance beginning at 1:00 PM Eastern Daylight Time on September 11, 2011, in honor of the 10th anniversary of the terrorist attacks committed against the United States on September 11, 2001.”
The Resolution, which does not have the force of law, calls on individuals and institutions to observe for at least one minute a moment of remembrance or prayer and “marking the moment in an appropriate manner, including by ringing bells, blowing whistles, or sounding sirens.” Senator Frank Lautenberg (D-NJ), who introduced S. Res. 237, has written an open letter to first responders and created a web site that contains additional information for individuals interested in learning more about how to participate in this national observance.
