SAFER Grants Application Period Now Open
Published Date: 01.30.2012
The FY 2011 Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) Grants application opened on January 30, 2012, and runs until Friday, February 24, 2012, at 5:00 P.M. EST. The National Volunteer Fire Council (NVFC) urges volunteer and combination departments to take advantage of this opportunity to apply for funding to help with recruitment and retention efforts.
The goal of the SAFER Grants is to assist local fire departments with staffing and deployment capabilities in order to respond to emergencies, assuring communities have adequate protection from fire and fire-related hazards. A portion of SAFER funding is set aside to assist volunteer and combination fire department with recruitment and retention.
The FY 2011 SAFER Grant Program Guidance and Application Kit are posted on the AFG web site at www.fema.gov/firegrants. All SAFER applicants should read the new FY 2011 SAFER Grants Program Guidance (PDF) to understand the FY 2011 award criteria, funding priorities, and important special application instructions for completing the application. Other documents available on the web site include SAFER Self-Evaluation Tools, Get Ready Guides, and FY11 SAFER Program Highlights.
The NVFC also offers resources to help departments prepare federal grant applications, as well as SAFER project ideas and tips. These materials are for reference only; be sure to read the FY 2011 program guidance carefully as priorities and procedures may have changed.
