Recognize First Responders During National Volunteer Week
Published Date: 02.23.2011
National Volunteer Week will be held April 10-16, and now is the time to start planning how your department and community will recognize the hard work and dedication of your volunteers. Sponsored by the HandsOn Network and the Points of Light Institute, National Volunteer Week: Celebrating People in Action is a time to honor those who dedicate time to strengthening their community. Take this opportunity to celebrate your volunteer first responders as well as your support team or Fire Corps program for all that they do to strengthen and serve your fire/EMS department.
Every year since 1974, each U.S. President, along with many governors, mayors, and other elected officials, has signed a proclamation promoting National Volunteer Week. To help citizens get involved, the Points of Light & Hands On Network offers a National Volunteer Week Toolkit with planning materials, sample media releases, and more, available at www.handsonnetwork.org.
Consider celebrating the achievements of your volunteers by nominating outstanding first responders and Fire Corps members for the Presidential Volunteer Service Award (PVSA). This prestigious award honors Americans who inspire others to engage in volunteer service by their demonstrated commitment and example. Award levels start at 100 hours of volunteer service.
To nominate a volunteer, send an email to nvfcoffice@nvfc.org that includes the person’s contact information, a detailed description of his or her service, and the number of hours volunteered. Use the subject line: PVSA Nomination. For more information on the Presidential Volunteer Service Award, visit www.presidentialserviceawards.gov/index.cfm.
